Clackamas County Board of Commissioners Chair Tootie Smith suffered a heart attack Tuesday, May 28, but is now in “good health,” according to a press release from Smith and the county.

The release said the heart attack was minor and Smith “received immediate medical care and had a medical procedure to address the issue.” She said in the release that heart disease runs in her family.

Smith recently placed second in the primary for board position 1 and is slated to face former Clackamas County sheriff Craig Roberts in the November general election. Board Vice Chair Ben West will lead meetings in Smith’s absence. Doctors told Smith to rest and recover for a few weeks, the release stated.

“I will receive regular updates on County business throughout my recovery. Regrettably, I was unable to participate in the County’s annual budget committee meetings last week. I am very pleased with the decisions and outcomes of my colleagues and budget committee members. I look forward to returning to the office very soon to continue the County’s important work,” Smith said in the release.

In a statement sent Thursday, June 6, Smith added: I am happy to report that I am moving ahead of schedule and doctors are expecting a fully recovery. I am grateful for the amazing outpouring of love and support. Can't wait to get back in the saddle soon!"
