The Texas County Coroner’s office answered 26 calls in May 2024, compared to 23 the previous month.

In the community, there were 20 natural deaths including: cancer (5), stroke (4), heart disease (2), lung disease (2), thyroid disease, ALS, arrhythmia, pulmonary edema, pulmonary embolism, renal failure and dementia.

There were two accidental deaths in the community, one due to a fall and one due to compression asphyxia.

There were four offender deaths at South Central Correctional Center in May. Two were due to natural causes – autoimmune hepatitis and pulmonary embolism. Two are pending investigation and autopsy results.

“The increase in cancer deaths continues to be a concern. I am monitoring the situation closely and I am participating in a study at the University of South Carolina that is examining closely the etiology of these deaths, including the role mRNA plays,” said Marie Lasater, county coroner.
