Apple says the iPhone 15 is green, or at least greener than earlier iPhones.

The iPhone improvements are part of a more extensive program:

Our goal is for Apple and all the products we make to be carbon neutral by 2030, reducing our total carbon emissions to no more than 9.6 million metric tons—at least a 75 percent reduction against our 2015 baseline.

The current iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Max are made of 20% renewable or recycled materials. Apple monitors the iPhone manufacturers’ corporate standards, although some are in China, which may be hard to gauge.

Apple’s phone packaging is 99% carbon-based. The company says its trade-in program ensures phones will not be thrown away or destroyed in harmful ways to the environment.

Apple has a challenge. It may not be able to upgrade the features of the iPhone 16 enough to get many iPhone 15 users to change to the newer smartphone. AI features may be part of the effort. But, a pitch for the environment may be nearly as good.
