“We Should All Be In Jail” – Kevin Costner Says He Knew Yellowstone Was A Soap Opera, But The Script Was Too Good

With some of the alleged bad blood between Kevin Costner and Taylor Sheridan (seems like Costner ire might be more directed towards the production than Sheridan himself, but nevertheless), Kevin doesn't seem to have a bad word to say about the Yellowstone creator and writer. In fact, quite the opposite... Costner recently sat down with Dax Shepard for an episode of his
Armchair Expert podcast, and dove into his entire career, his new film saga Horizon, and of course, his journey as John Dutton, the patriarch of Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe. As of right now, Costner is not expected to appear in Season 5 Part 2, the series finale of Yellowstone, although an 11th hour agreement could come into play and he could make an appearance (maybe just long enough to get killed off?) but I'm not optimistic. However, despite the schedule and the production delays ultimately forcing Costner to move on to his own project, he maintains that he loves the Yellowstone
world and for him, it really came down to just a great script: "Yellowstone was just a really great script, boy, here comes this boring song from me, but it was just a great script." And when he was initially tasked with selling the show... everyone had the same question: Are you going to star in all 7 seasons? "I thought it was kind of good, it hadn't been made and all of the sudden they said 'would you go over and sell this to the buyers in Europe?' So I'm on a plane, there's nobody on the plane with me, I land about 7 in the morning I'm whisked to a theater and now it's 9:30 and it's filled with like 300 buyers from different countries. I looked over at the guy that brought me and he was wanting me to say I'd be in 7 [seasons] and I said 'no, I've agreed to do 3, but I think this is good enough that it can carry on.' I'm doing it and I was the only one there and they liked how that discussion went... so I sold this one season for them and I had finally agree to do three, I thought it was going to be one long one, but then it turned out it was gonna be a series.
They first said, 'do you wanna do 7?' And I said no, 'well, 5?' No, ain't happening... I didn't want to bait and switch so I said I'd do 3 but I ended up making 5." So why did he stay on as long as he did? It's simple... he loved it: "I just believed in the world. I knew it was a soap opera. I knew we should all be in jail. We've all killed people there and so you throw logic out the window a little bit, but he has a great ear and he just wrote that stuff really authentically and it was good fun and he wrote my part especially well and Kelly's part, so listen, I had a lot of fun with it. It was really good, I recognized that so I did it... the best I could possibly do it." Yellowstone has resumed filming for the series finale, which is expected to premiere in November of this year.
