Pair in custody in shooting that killed 2, including Gila River officer

Two suspects have been taken into custody as suspects in the shooting deaths Saturday of a Gila River Indian Community officer and a bystander, the FBI stated.

The suspects are males – one an adult, the other a juvenile – and both are receiving medical care for their injuries, according to an FBI release.

The shooting that killed officer Joshua Briese and another individual occurred early Saturday morning, June 1, when authorities received reports of a disturbance in Santan where a large crowd had gathered.

A total of six people – including another officer - were shot.

“While the FBI does not comment on operational specifics, the FBI and Gila River PD are conducting interviews, gathering evidence, sharing information and collectively working to identify all angles of the investigation,” the FBI release stated.

“There is a widely variable pace to investigations given the need for methodical and thorough evidence-gathering.”

Once the FBI’s case is complete, it will be handed over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona for a charging decision.
