Speaking with Forbes , Hardy opened up about his experience filming Venom: The Last Dance, which will be the third and final film in Sony’s Venom franchise.
Forbes’ article notes that Venom: The Last Dance could “quite possibly” receive an R-rating from the MPA, with Hardy saying that they were allowed “to push it.”
“By the third one, we’ve been given so much creative support to do – to push it,” he commented. “It’s a much wider piece and there’s much more love – not that there was not love in the last ones. We’ve been allowed to put more of our ideas into it and I’m really excited to see how they land.”
The 2018 Venom movie and the 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, were both rated PG-13, as were the other two entries in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, 2022’s Morbius and 2024’s Madame Web.
It has been confirmed, however, that Kraven the Hunter — which releases in United States theaters this December and is also part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe — will be rated R.
What is Venom: The Last Dance about?
“In Venom: The Last Dance, Tom Hardy returns as Venom, one of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters, for the final film in the trilogy,” reads the synopsis. “Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie’s last dance.”
Along with Hardy, Venom: The Last Dance stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Peggy Lu, and Cristo Fernández. The film is directed by Kelly Marcel.
Venom: The Last Dance releases in United States theaters on October 25, 2024.
