“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” — Philippians 2:4

Selflessness is one of the strong foundations of a Christian life. Jesus tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves. He wants us to take care of others and look out for one another’s well-being. This is how we can be true servants of the Lord.

Jesus looked out for our own interests in the most gracious and merciful way possible. He left his heavenly throne to come down to us sinners. He lived a perfect life and performed miracles, including the healing of others. Then, he was rejected, beaten, tortured and hung on the cross to die. He paid the penalty for our sins on the cross so we wouldn’t have to make that same sacrifice in our own lives. Then, he rose from the dead to bring us salvation through a loving relationship with him.

Jesus was the perfect example of how we should live. No, we can’t raise the dead or cure blindness. However, we can care for one another. We can mourn with those who have lost someone. We can help a blind person find their way. We can bring food to the hungry. We can bring clothes to the homeless. There are so many different things we can do as Christians to look out for the interests of others.

Due to the sin in our hearts, it is natural for us to think about our own needs first. It is difficult to care for others. It’s only through the power of Jesus Christ that we can counter this feeling in our hearts. We can pray to God to give us the strength to look out for the interests of others. Christ helps us be the person we should be through the renewing of our minds, and he gives us the desire to help other people. All we have to do is come and lay our hearts before him.

This week, pray about how you can look out for the interests of others. Let Jesus’ life encourage you to help those around you. Follow his example and live as a missionary for the Lord.
