The Shallow Ford Foundation announces that two students from Yadkin County have received scholarship awards thanks to the local donors who have generously made these opportunities possible.

Austin Choplin, class of 2024 from Forbush High School, was awarded the Marvin’s Garage Doors Scholarship in Honor of Marvin Brown. The award of $1,000 was available to a graduating senior from Forbush High School who has demonstrated good character and ambition and is seeking a degree or certificate related to a career in electronics, welding, or construction. Choplin will attend Surry Community College to complete an Associate’s Degree in Mechatronics.

This award was established by the owners of Marvin’s Garage Doors to honor the founder and encourage local students to pursue careers in trades that are in demand and offer competitive pay with little college debt.

Maggie Ray, class of 2024 from Starmount High School and Shore Scholar, received both The Alpha and Omega Corn Maze Scholarship, awarded for the first time this year, and The Bonnie M. Chappell Memorial Scholarship.

The Alpha and Omega Corn Maze Scholarship of $2,500 was created to benefit current and former employees of Alpha & Omega Corn Maze, LLC who are seeking to continue their education toward a credential. Maggie has worked at the Corn Maze every fall and spring season since 2021.

The Bonnie M. Chappell Memorial Scholarship of $5,000 over two years is given to a 2024 graduating senior from Yadkin County Schools seeking to continue their education toward a nursing degree or credential. This scholarship honors Bonnie M. Chappell, who overcame many challenges in her life, including her mother passing away when Bonnie was very young. Bonnie worked for decades at Hanes Hosiery and on the family farm alongside her husband, Cecil. When she was over 40 years old, she returned to school to obtain a nursing degree. She then worked as a nurse until she retired.
