WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) — It’s day two in the federal firearms trial of President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.

Both sides made their opening statements on Tuesday.

“This is the first time a sitting president’s family member has been on trial,” said Todd Belt of George Washington University.

First Lady Dr. Jill Biden walked into the courtroom for a second day to show her support.

Political science professor Todd Belt says the first lady and Hunter’s sister sitting in the courtroom shows how close the Biden family is.

“I think Dr. Jill Biden is there because she cares about Hunter Biden. And, you know, what’s going to happen to him,” Belt said.

Prosecutors started their case by saying, “No one is above the law, no matter what your name is.”

Prosecutors say Hunter lied about his drug use on a gun application.

Hunter Biden’s attorney argued that his client did not believe he had a drug problem when he stated in the paperwork that he was not in the throes of addiction.

Belt doesn’t believe the trial will have an impact on President Biden’s reelection bid.

“The American people are voting for the president, not the president’s family. And most people realize there might be some people in their own family who may have gone astray,” Belt said.

Ohio Republican Senator J.D. Vance, who disagrees with the Biden family politically, said, “I really believe in the American system of law and order. So, I certainly hope that he gets a fair trial, because I think it’s something every American deserves. And Donald Trump didn’t get it.”

In this case, it’s a jury of six men and six women who will decide.
