NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — They say simple thank you goes a long way — and one lucky teacher in Northampton County would agree with that.

Rachel Powell won $2500 from the Virginia Lottery’s Thank a Teacher campaign, and her school will receive $2500 in supplies from The Supply Room .

This year, during National Teacher Appreciation Week, over 130,000 thank-you notes were sent to Virginia K-12 public school teachers as part of the Thank a Teacher campaign.

Powell’s name was randomly selected out of 17,000 teachers who entered a special code from their thank-you notes.

Virginia Lottery and its partners surprised Powell at Occohannock Elementary School in Exmore where she teaches third grade.

The Thank a Teacher campaign is a partnership between the Virginia Lottery, The Supply Room, IGT and NeoPollard Interactive. Over the last eight years, the program has recognized 18 educators throughout the state.
