MSNBC’s Chris Hayes was in stitches on Tuesday night after watching Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) profess his love of the law.

The All In host aired a montage of Republicans’ “whining and histrionics” in the wake of Donald Trump being convicted in New York last week, where a jury found him guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records.

“This is not just a few oddballs,” Hayes said. “The entire party down the line is carrying it out – everyone Including on Capitol Hill today where Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee trotted out every imaginable insane conspiracy theory about Trump being railroaded and laid them at the feet of the current attorney general, Merrick Garland .”

Republicans have baselessly alleged that President Joe Biden and Garland were somehow behind the prosecution of Trump in New York.

During the aforementioned committee hearing, Garland was peppered with questions about Trump’s prosecution in New York and the two federal indictments the former president is facing. Special Jack Smith , whom Garland appointed, is prosecuting Trump for trying to subvert the 2020 election and retaining government documents after leaving office.

Hayes played another montage – this time from the hearing – where Republicans went off on Garland.

“Justice is no longer blind in America,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) declared.

Gaetz, an attorney by trade, offered a more personal take.

“I am saddened by it because, like you, I have given my life to the law,” he told Garland. “I care deeply about the law.”

The clip ended and the camera cut to Hayes, who proceeded to cackle for several seconds.

“I have given my life to the law,” he said after composing himself, mocking Gaetz’s remarks. “Matt Gaetz cares deeply about the law. He’s given his life to the law.”

Gaetz is facing a House Ethics Committee probe over an allegation he slept with a 17-year-old girl. He denies the accusation. Last year, the Department of Justice wrapped up an investigation into the lawmaker and declined to prosecute.

The host then rehashed the history of Trump’s business records case, for which Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen went to prison. During the 2016 presidential campaign, Cohen paid hush money to two women Trump had affairs with. Trump reimbursed Cohen while cooking the Trump Organization’s books to do so.

“The investigation into the crimes Donald Trump was just convicted for – the one last week, New York, 34 guilty counts – that was initiated when Donald Trump was the president of these United States,” Hayes noted. “It was done by his own Department of Justice back in 2017. It was the Trump Department of Justice that probed and indicted, for federal crimes, his former attorney Michael Cohen for the cover-up of hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal on behalf of Trump as criminal violations of federal criminal law.”

The host pointed out that the investigation was overseen by then-U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Geoffrey Berman , who was fired by Trump’s Attorney General Bill Barr for continuing his probe of the hush money case. Berman also alleged Trump pressured him and other federal prosecutors to investigate his political rivals.
