A new study from AGU Advances examines the major causes of rising ocean temperatures and the damage they can cause to the environment. In the paper “Column-Compound Extremes in the Global Ocean,” the authors call these factors “stressors.” The scientists point out, “The global ocean is becoming warmer, more acidic, and losing oxygen due to climate change. On top of this trend, sudden increases in temperature or drops in pH or oxygen adversely affect marine organisms when they cannot quickly adapt to these extreme conditions. These conditions are worse for marine organisms when such extremes occur together in the vertical water column, leading to column-compound extreme (CCX) events, severely reducing the available habitable space.” Ultimately, the threat is the future of a large number of species. Climatecrisis247 believes this is among a large number of studies showing the effect of the damage done to oceans by humans. In many cases, the studies point to warming oceans that help the development of intense storms and the melting of the polar areas, which in turn causes rising sea levels.

Infrastructure experts may have found a way to decrease the number of blackouts in Texas because of the weakness of its electricity grid. On its face, the solution seems simple but would require a huge amount of engineering. MIT’s Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research study was tied to legislation interconnecting parts of the  Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT). On paper, this would lower blackouts in large storms. Climatecrisis247 believes that the plan is at least partially politically motivated. It is tied to legislation written by state legislators. This may be an issue because less than the entire Texas grid is included in the plan.

Nations Too Slow On Renewable Energy Progress

The IEA issued a policy paper about how quickly renewable energy can grow between today and 2030. Titled “Countries around the world have a major opportunity to set stronger plans for achieving the global goal of tripling renewable power by 2030,” part of the analysis is pessimistic. “At the same time, key challenges remain, from lengthy wait times for project permits, inadequate investment in grid infrastructure, the need to quickly and cost-efficiently integrate variable renewables, and high financing costs, especially in emerging and developing economies,” the authors wrote. Climatecrisis247 believes that this is part of a broader problem. Public sector plans run into issues of money. Wind energy, for example, has not grown rapidly because of slow project development and infrastructure issues. That makes access to private capital difficult. Also, the movement of capital for building renewable energy facilities from rich nations to poor ones has been slow.

Too Late To Solve Global Warming Trouble

New research shows that while the Earth is warming at a record pace, climate change may not be accelerating. According to the AP , “The group of 57 scientists from around the world used United Nations-approved methods to examine what’s behind last year’s deadly burst of heat. They said even with a faster warming rate they don’t see evidence of significant acceleration in human-caused climate change beyond increased fossil fuel burning.” The report also said the ongoing use of fossil fuels means “Earth is likely to reach the point in 4.5 years that it can no longer avoid crossing the internationally accepted threshold for warming: 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit ).” Climatecrisis247 believes this is yet another piece of research that shows climate change will reach a point of no return sooner than many expected. Goals to slow the rise in global temperatures with targets of 2030 and 2050 are useless.
