Laurie Buckhout, the Republican nominee vying for the First Congressional District seat in the 2024 general election, will be speaking at the upcoming monthly meeting of the Tar River Republican Women.

The gathering is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at the Nashville Exchange Steakhouse & Café across from the Nash County Courthouse complex.

Buckhout, in a phone interview Tuesday evening, said that this had been in the works for some time.

“I have been trying to get out there for months — and finally, the stars aligned,” Buckhout said. “And I'm just thrilled because they are really a committed bunch of Republican women. They’ve got some serious patriots at this club.”

Buckhout said that in going to GOP women’s clubs, she has found that “Republican women are tough” and that their respective club members are dedicated and are fighters.

“So, every time I go and speak to one, it's always a lot of fun. It's always exciting. It's invigorating,” she said.

Buckhout and Libertarian Tom Bailey are challenging first-term incumbent Democrat Don Davis in the Nov. 5 race for the right to represent a Congressional District redrawn last year by the GOP-controlled N.C. General Assembly.

As for the state of the race, Buckhout said, “Big money is coming in. A lot of donors are coming in. The Democrats are bringing big money against me — and we have a very motivated Republican Party who is going to support me.”

Buckhout also said that she has been told the contest has become one of the top five Congressional races in the nation now.

“I mean, we're just fired up,” she said.

She spoke of the surreal feeling of how the contest got so big so fast.

“But, I mean, it's so exciting. I love it,” she said. “I love a good fight. We're having a great ride. Everyone's fired up.”

The Tar River Republican Women as an organization covers Nash, Edgecombe, Wilson, Halifax and Northampton counties.
