Monkeys are cute, if not simply straight-up adorable, and they know it. With their long, curly tails, expressive personalities matched by their almost-human faces, and insatiable curiosity, it's not hard to see why animal lovers are so fascinated by these precocious primates.

Unfortunately, monkeys can also be devious, and they know how to use their cute, curious demeanors to get away with murder- alright, maybe not murder , but definitely petty crime. Case in point: this "crime scene footage," shot by a tourist in Argentina who found himself at the receiving end of a monkey hotel room break in!

Some mischievous monkeys in Argentina opened the door to a family's hotel room and in a matter of seconds, bolted through the room, swiped a bag of chips from the minibar, and fled outside. #monkey #argentina #news #abcnews

The capuchin caper captured by Jackson Silvio (shared on TikTok by @abcnews ) just goes to show why monkeys make such great petty thieves . Silvio doesn't know what to make of the mischevious monkey that just broke into his hotel room , but he seems almost enraptured by the little primate hiding behind the curtain as his friends gather around outside. The hotel room invader looks innocent and almost bashful- until he bolts out of his hiding spot, swipes a bag of chips, and ducks back out the door with the loot in under five seconds. They've definitely done this before, and no, I'm not just saying that-  there's documented evidence of it!

A Hotel Beset by Monkey Mischief

Six months before this video emerged, Reddit user u/Rdubya posted photos of monkeys climbing near his hotel balcony with the caption "The hotel I'm staying at in Argentna gets raided by monkeys around 6 pm every night." The balcony and landscape shown in the Reddit post and Silvio's video are clearly from the same hotel, which the Reddit OP identified as the Gran Melia Hotel overlooking the Iguazu Falls in Misiones, Argentina.

While a lot of Argentina is covered by temperate grasslands, snowy mountains, and dry deserts like the vast Patagonian Steppe, the northern part of the country extends into more tropical climes. Iguazu Falls (a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984) rides the border between the northeast Argentinian province of Misiones and the southern Brazilian state of Parana and is surrounded by thousands of acres of subtropical rainforest full of diverse wildlife. While condors soar and Patagonian pumas prowl in the south of Argentina, it's all monkey business in Iguazu!

According to u/Rdubya, the Gran Melia monkeys looked for rooms with unlocked doors to raid their minibars (the same thing that happened to Silvio). Gran Melia's TripAdvisor reviews were also full of monkey mentions, some of them confirming that tiny tricksters like to come out at sunset. It's clear now how the monkeys developed their MO: they wait till the sun starts to set, when people are either heading downstairs to dinner or opening up their balconies to take in the scenic sunset views and cool evening breeze. Then, when the blissed-out tourists least expect it, they strike!

Let this be a lesson to anyone who visits locales famous for their mischievous monkey populations, regardless of whether they're in Argentina, Thailand, South Africa , or anywhere else. If you value the safety of your belongings (especially your minibar snacks), never leave an outside door unlocked!
