Charles County Public Schools is offering enrichment camps, academic and athletic programs and career exploration this summer for students in kindergarten to the 12th grade.

Summer enrichment camps for students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be held in two sessions — June 24-28 and Aug. 5-9, Mondays through Fridays. The morning sessions will be held from 8:30-11 a.m. with the afternoon session from 12:30-3 p.m. Camps for students in Grades 1 through 8 will be held at Mattawoman Middle School and Berry Elementary School. Camps for students bound for kindergarten in the 2024-2025 school year will be held at Berry.

Summer enrichment camps for students in first through eighth grades are interest-based and include those focused on music, sports, STEM, crafts, arts, reading and other subjects. Two free summer enrichment camps are being offered for students in Grades 1 through 8.

Kindergarten camps center on introducing students to routines and what to expect when they start school. One free kindergarten camp is being offered to students who are registered to attend a Charles kindergarten program.

AlphaBEST, a service Charles County Public Schools contracts with to provide before and aftercare for students between the ages of five and 12, will be available for a fee between camps from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Students in grades 9 through 12, can prepare for high school with Advanced Placement Boot Camps. The boot camps are held at Mattawoman Middle School from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30-3 p.m., June 24-28, and Aug. 5-9.

To receive two free camp AP boot camp sessions, Charles students in Grades 9 through 12 must be enrolled in an AP course for the 2024-25 school year at their high school.

Career Exploration Camps — previously called Career and Technical Education (CTE) Exploration Camps — are provided for Charles public students who will be in seventh and eighth grades in the 2024-25 school year.

They will be held in July over three separate sessions at North Point High School. The free camps offer students an opportunity to learn more about CTE programs offered at North Point and the Robert D. Stethem Educational Center, as well as those that are housed in all Charles public high schools. The camps are set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

The Career Exploration Camp sessions will be held July 8-11, July 15-18 and July 22-25. Field trips will be held during the camp. Students will also learn about the Early College Program at the College of Southern Maryland the Dual Enrollment program and apprenticeship opportunities. Shuttle transportation to and from hub locations will be available, and lunch will be provided.

Preference will be given to students who have not attended the CTE Exploration Camps in the past. Space is limited, and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

STEM Drop-In Day Camps are held 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 17, 18 and 20 for students who will be in Grades 4 through 8 in the 2024-25 school year. Campers will explore various STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — content and themes each day, with projects that can be finished in one day. The nonrefundable tuition is $50.

The James E. Richmond Science Center will hold a free Junior Space Entrepreneur Program for high school students who will be sophomores, juniors and seniors in the 2024-2025 school year from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 1-14. The program is in partnership with the Space Foundation.

The Lackey Summer Youth Camp, held at Henry E. Lackey High School, provides supervised activities in soccer, touch football, basketball, floor hockey, swimming, kickball, wiffle ball and other games. The camp is held from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, from June 13 to July 5. The camp will be closed on June 19 and July 4.

The Charles County Sheriff’s Office and Charles County Public Schools are partnering to offer sports camps to students interested in football, baseball, soccer and basketball. Most camps are offered to students in Grades 5 through 8, with the soccer camp geared toward girls in Grades 2 to 5. The camps are free to students with limited space available at registration. Lunch will be provided to campers.

Some camps will have waitlists for students who do not secure a spot at a camp. Students placed on a waitlist are not guaranteed a spot at a camp.
