Many Americans Don’t Want EVs

The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago recently ran a poll about climate change. The results were bad news for EV makers. The primary result is that” only 21% of U.S. adults say they are “very” or “extremely” likely to buy an EV for their next car.”

The primary reasons are familiar. Some respondents did not like the high prices of EVs, others were worried about the range between charges, and still others were worried about the number of charging stations. Range was a concern of about half of those queried.

One issue is that most objections cannot be overcome, at least not soon. Tesla and several large car manufacturers say that they are working on EVs with prices below $25,000. There is no evidence that any of these will be released next year.

EV Range Problems

Most EVs have a range of less than 250 miles on a full charge. Cold weather affects batteries so that that figure can be much lower. There are about 65,000 charging stations in the US, but they are heavily concentrated in California and large cities in the Northeast.

The slowdown in EV sales in the US over the last several months was not anticipated. Perhaps that is because car companies did not do enough market research. If they had, they might have seen the problems coming.
