Many of us love to spend time outdoors and in our gardens, relishing the beauty of nature and the wildlife that visits. Hummingbirds, with their vibrant colors and rapid wing beats, are a favorite for many. To attract these little marvels, many of us place feeders filled with sugar water in our yards.

But did you know those seemingly harmless glass hummingbird feeders could pose a hidden danger? TikTok creator Athena recently learned all about it and shared her new-found info in the video below.

So, let's talk about glass feeders . While pretty to look at, they may not be the best choice for our tiny feathered friends. The danger lies in the feeder's material and the sugar water itself.

Glass feeders allow sunlight to penetrate fully, heating the sugar water inside. When sugar water sits in the sun for a few days, it can get hot and start to ferment. Fermentation is a natural process where yeast converts sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. While that might sound like a recipe for a tropical cocktail, it's bad news for hummingbirds.

Why is Fermentation Bad for Hummingbirds?

Fermented sugar water can be harmful to hummingbirds. The high temperatures and fermentation process can produce mold and bacteria, which can make the birds sick. Hummingbirds have delicate digestive systems, and consuming fermented sugar water can lead to a range of health issues, from digestive upset to more severe illnesses.

So, what can you do to prevent your help from becoming a major hurt for the birds? Well, luckily you don't have to bid farewell to your hummingbird visitors. While not everyone can create a pollinator-friendly garden to attract hummingbirds, there is plenty you can do to make sure your feeder is as safe as possible.

First, choose feeders made from materials that block out sunlight, like ceramic or  colored plastic. These will keep the sugar water cooler and less prone to fermentation. Also, clean your feeders regularly. In hotter areas, this means every day, but at the very least, every other day. Disassemble the feeder as much as possible to ensure every nook and cranny is thoroughly cleaned. Use small scrub brushes to reach corners and crevices effectively. Finally, make sure that the feeder is completely dry before refilling to minimize residual contamination. Also, clean away any drips or spills below where the feeder hangs to prevent unwanted guests like ants or other pests.

By taking these steps, you can continue to enjoy the delightful presence of hummingbirds in your garden without putting them at risk. Remember, a little extra effort goes a long way in ensuring the safety and well-being of these precious creatures.
