WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – An FDA panel has rejected a first-of-its kind proposal to use the psychedelic drug MDMA as a treatment for PTSD, which could have a major impact on those suffering from the disorder, including veterans.

Even though an expert advisory panel rejected the use of this drug for PTSD, the FDA could still give its approval.

In a 10-1 no vote Tuesday, experts on the FDA’s advisory panel cited flawed research and risky side effects as reasons they’d reject the use of MDMA as a treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder.

“I don’t feel like the risks, the missing data, the gaps, the unknowns, outweigh that benefit,” said John Hertig of Butler University.

Research on MDMA, also known as molly or ecstasy, has shown some promise to help those dealing with PTSD but caution and concern won out Tuesday.

“I don’t think we’re quite there yet, but I think the conversation is there and I’m looking forward to seeing where it can go,” said Consumer Representative Kim Witczak.

The panel’s one yea vote said the drugs do have potential, especially for service members who saw combat.

“I’m putting on my clinician hat and has been stated before we are in dire need of new treatments for PTSD…I have colleagues who deployed, have PTSD and this has the potential to make a difference.  Now that’s not without its risks,” said Dr. Walter Dunn, Psychiatry Professor at UCLA.

However, the panel’s rejection was just a recommendation.

“Our veterans fought for this country, sacrificed for this country, and it’s our duty to give them the best therapies available for their healing of those invisible wounds,” said Rep. Lou Correa (D-Calif.).

The panel’s no vote came as some in Congress argued for more federal funding for MDMA research on how the drugs can impact veterans stricken with the disorder.

“These veterans go to other countries to receive these therapies. They’re cured and they come back. Why in God’s name do we not provide these therapies here in the United States?” asked Correa.

MDMA is the first drug psychedelic drug considered for therapeutic use by the FDA for PTSD treatment, others including LSD and psilocybin, are also expected to be reviewed by the agency.

The FDA is expected to give its final decision on the use of MDMA by August.
