It should come as no surprise the United States is the betting favorite at DraftKings and other major sportsbooks to win the most medals at the upcoming Summer Olympics.

They did take home the lion's share at the last Summer Games, after all. Not to mention they have taken home the most medals in seven straight Summer Olympics leading up to the upcoming games in Paris.

So, who is their big competition with oddsmakers to dominate in France and bring home the most hardware? Here are a few top contenders.

China +1100. The U.S. topped China in medal total at the last Summer Olympics 113-89.  However, they only topped China in gold medals 39-38, so it's understandable they would be the next favorite to take home the most hardware in Paris.

Nielsen tells us that "diving, shooting, swimming, weightlifting, table tennis, artistic gymnastics and badminton are China’s key medal-winning sports" for China. Gymnastics in particular is a big sport to keep an eye on since China had the most gold medals in that sport at the Tokyo Games. The U.S. will be keen to counter this year with Simone Biles fully back in the mix.

Japan and Great Britain +5000 . Japan won 58 overall medals as the host country in the last Summer Olympics compared to Great Britain's 64 but bested them in the gold medal category 27-22. Two events where Japan excelled at the Olympics — karate and baseball — will not be included at the Games in Paris, however judo and skateboarding are still part of the schedule.

As for Great Britain, Nielsen says "British success over the past three Olympic Games has been built on having medal winners in at least 20 sports." They will need that success against the U.S. and China this summer.

France +10000. Being a 100-1 long shot to win the most medals doesn't seem very promising. But France is the host country this time around, so there is a chance they could benefit from home court advantage.

In fact, France is projected to have its best Summer Games since 1900.

"Summer Olympic success for France has been achieved in 15 to 19 different sports at each Olympics this century but medals are now projected in 23 different sports, a new French record," Nielsen says.
