Whether you're talking about fashion, food, or just about anything else, trends come and go, and the choices people make will always be influenced by what's more or less popular — even (or especially) when it comes to baby names.

While some names seem to sit perennially at the top of parents' lists, others go from being all the rage to fading away almost entirely. So what's in vogue for 2024? Every year, BabyCenter analyzes "up-to-the-minute" baby name data, and what they've found for this year so far might surprise you.

While the top 10 name choices include some familiar monikers (think Olivia and Liam), other interesting trends are emerging . As Babycenter reported, fantasy-inspired baby names are huge right now thanks to popular movies and TV shows like Dune: Part Two and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. The name Chani (the warrior character played by Zendaya) has gone up over 3,300 spots this year, while her "secret name," Sihaya, is ranking higher as well. Percy is on the rise for both boys and girls , and Perseus has become more popular for boys specifically. Ares and Hermes are getting some traction this year, too. Meanwhile, readers of the bestselling book "House of Flame and Shadow" are choosing Bryce for girls and Quinlan for boys.

Star athletes are likewise inspiring parents . Thanks to Iowa State basketball player Caitlin Clark, Caitlin is up 1,599 places; South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso is causing Kamilla to climb the charts.

This year's solar eclipse has resulted in a spike in "celestial" names: Sol, Sunny, Stella, and Aurora. Meanwhile, historical dramas like Bridgerton have triggered an interest in names such as Penelope, Charlotte, Eloise, Francesca, and Gregory.

And, perhaps unsurprisingly, even baby names are being changed by AI (sort of). After Microsoft's $13 billion investment in OpenAI, CEO Satya Nadella's name is up 208 spots from last year.

Tips for Choosing a Baby Name

There's no question that choosing a baby name can be an overwhelming process . To narrow down your options, you might want to go with a family name, according to The Bump.

"One way to honor both sides of the family is to choose the first name from one side of the family and the middle name from the other side. Alternatively, you could also name baby after a personal hero , like a loved one, a historical icon or a figure in pop culture. Pick someone who means something special to you and who embodies the characteristics you wish for your little one ."

Places that are meaningful for you and your family can also provide inspiration (think Austin, Brooklyn, etc.), as can classic books (Scout, Madeline, Eloise). Whatever name you pick, consider keeping it private until your baby is born.

"Baby names can be highly subjective and are based on personal taste — just look at the unique celebrity baby names out there — but that doesn’t mean one option is better than another. Oftentimes loved ones may comment, offer unsolicited advice or try to sway your opinion. But if you’re happy with your baby name or baby name options, that’s really all that matters."

Hopefully your baby will be happy with their name, too!
