San Francisco Mayor London Breed said Wednesday afternoon that City Hall was defaced overnight with graffiti that contained racist and sexist slurs.

Breed said several city employees who arrived at work early that morning discovered the messages, which crews quickly worked to cover with plastic tarps. She said Wednesday that the graffiti was being removed.

“We have people who come into this building every day to not only work but to pay their taxes, people who come here to get married ,” Breed told reporters outside of City Hall , video of which was posted to X. “City Hall represents a public space.”

“We will never tolerate any discourse or any hate like what we are experiencing now through the harmful words that have been sprayed onto City Hall’s front door because we want to ensure that this place continues to be a beacon of hope,” she added.

A spokesperson with the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office told The Examiner that it has opened an investigation into “the racist, misogynistic graffiti spray painted on the front of San Francisco City Hall early this morning.”

In addition to reviewing surveillance footage of the incident, the sheriff’s office said that it has also increased foot patrols in and around City Hall .

“We condemn such acts of vandalism which go against the principles of diversity, inclusion and respect which San Francisco stands for, and we will not allow crimes of intolerance to undermine or divide us as a City,” the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office spokesperson wrote to The Examiner.

Breed said “my goal is to do everything we can to ensure that there is a full, thorough, and transparent investigation and we’re able to remove this as soon as possible and we’re able to continue to get back to the work of The City.”

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call 415-734-3111.
