LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. — A South Bend woman is facing serious charges after allegedly smuggling marijuana into the Indiana State Prison on Michigan City's west side. According to court documents, 38-year-old Janise Clark was apprehended on Sunday while reporting for her shift as a correctional officer. A fellow staff member noticed her plastic-wrapped sandwich looked suspicious, prompting further inspection. When the sandwich was placed in an X-Ray machine, it revealed two vacuum-sealed plastic bags containing nearly a half pound of marijuana hidden between the slices of bread.

Yeomans said she heard the guard harassing her son over the phone.

The City and County of Denver likely will pay $500,000 next week to settle lawsuits against the police and sheriff’s departments. The City Council will vote Monday on two settlements. The first, stemming from a lawsuit filed against the police department in U.S. District Court, case 2023 CV00750-RM-JPO, is for $100,000. The second settlement is for $400,000 to be paid to Scott Peters and stems from a prisoner’s civil rights allegedly being violated, according to Justia. According to Justia, the lawsuit lists as defendants the City and County of Denver, Daniel Rodriguez, John Doe 1, John Doe 2, John Doe 3-12, Mohammed Mohammed, Michael Fitzmaurice, James Casias, Billie Humbles, Daniel Trujillo, Ian Schiffhauer, Michael Bennett, Cherif Sarr and Noreen Roberson. Additional information was not available Thursday.
