IBERVILLE PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) – The Grosse Tete bridge is closed after it was hit by a boat on Thursday, June 6.

According to the Iberville Parish Sheriff’s Office, the bridge was hit around 5:30 a.m. by “a tugboat with barges,” IPSO said.

At this time, the sheriff’s office and Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development are assessing the damage.

Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi said there was “significant damage.”

IPSO said “the bridge was struck when it was not completely open.”

“Damage was done to the turntable that it sits on, we are assessing damage right now to see if it can be closed so that vehicles can use it,” Stassi said.

He said that this could be significant and involve lengthy repairs.

Motorists should consider an alternative route for the foreseeable future. Stassi said that motorists should come through Port Allen on LA 1.

Rodney Mallett, a spokesperson for DOTD said on the west side, drivers can take La. 77 to I-10.
