There will be no return trip to Sun Prairie for the Waunakee boys’ lacrosse team.

In a state semifinal match interrupted by inclement weather on Tuesday and completed on Wednesday, the No. 1 ranked Warriors were upset by Middleton 14-7.

It was Waunakee’s only loss of the season and ended the Warriors’ 2024 campaign. Waunakee finished up 21-1 overall, after wrapping up the regular season with an 18-0 mark and a 10-0 record in winning the Badger Conference title.

When the match was paused, the Cardinals led 13-4. Waunakee scored three quick goals at the beginning of the fourth quarter but couldn’t get any closer.

Gunnar McFadden had a hat trick for Waunakee, while Sam Hogland totaled two goals and Brandon Sawicki and Ethan Evans recorded one each.

Charlie King notched three assists, as Wade Bryan, McFadden and Evans had one each.

Bryan also led the way in groundballs, scooping up four. He also had four forced turnovers/takeaways, with Nate Samson finishing with two.
