Depending on the source, Americans can expect to pay an average of about $170 to $195 a month on car insurance . Much of it is determined by factors such as the type of vehicle you drive, where you live, your driving record and the insurer.

If you have a clean driving record your insurance rates will be lower than if your record is dotted with tickets or accidents. Similarly, younger drivers tend to pay more than older ones. Additionally, if you live in a state with comparatively low car insurance rates — such as Maine, Virginia and Hawaii — you’ll spend less than in a state with high rates (Louisiana, Florida, Michigan).

Although much of the cost is out of your control, there are some things you can do to ensure you are not paying more than your budget allows.

For example, some financial experts recommend that you spend a maximum of 20% of your monthly take-home pay on all vehicle-related expenses, including your auto loan, gas, maintenance and insurance. But if you’re already struggling to keep up with the bills, you might need to lower this amount.

Another step you can take to lower car insurance costs is to drive the right kind of vehicle. MarketWatch recently conducted a review of average car insurance rates by make and model. As part of its analysis, MarketWatch looked over hundreds of rate estimates from dozens of providers using cost estimate data from Quadrant Information Services.
