GRAYSON COUNTY, Ky. (WKRN) — A Kentucky school band director died in a Tuesday afternoon collision with a semi-tractor-trailer, according to officials.

Kentucky State Police (KSP) said the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office asked troopers to investigate a fatal two-vehicle crash near mile marker 116 on the Western Kentucky Parkway just before 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4.

Authorities said the preliminary investigation revealed 28-year-old Kelsey Dunn, of Elkton, was heading eastbound in a 2011 Toyota Camry during heavy rainfall when she lost control of the vehicle, crossed the median, and ended up in the path of a westbound semi-tractor-trailer.

According to KSP, the Grayson County Coroner’s Office pronounced Dunn dead at the scene, but the other driver was not injured.

Officials said the affected area of the Western Kentucky Parkway was closed for several hours while crews opened a detour at mile marker 124 so troopers could investigate the collision. Members of the sheriff’s office, the coroner’s office, Grayson County EMS, and the Clarkson County Volunteer Fire Department provided assistance at the scene.

Hardin County Schools confirmed Dunn was North Hardin High School’s director of bands, saying, “Generations will feel the impact Ms. Dunn made on students, her fellow staff members, the school, alumni, band boosters and our community. She cultivated and nurtured relationships with students and ensured that their performances and presentations represented North Hardin High School with class, respect and dignity. Ms. Dunn was passionate about her students and their well-being. She was more than a teacher; she was a mentor and a friend to all she encountered. Her dedication to North Hardin was immeasurable. She gave so much of herself to her bands and NHHS as a whole.”

The district also provided a list of agencies to offer counseling to children who may need it following Dunn’s death.

In addition to posting multiple videos honoring Dunn, North Hardin High School shared the following Facebook post from Todd County Bands on Wednesday, June 5:

The Todd County Bands extend their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and students of Todd County Band class of 2013 alumna, Kelsey Dunn. She was a passionate and dedicated member of the band as was her brother Trevor. Her parents, Ricky and Pam, were very active and committed supporters of the band even after their children graduated. Kelsey worked on the band camp staff from 2018-2020 and was serving as the band director at North Hardin High School at the time of her passing. Truly she was a shining star in the music education world and a light in the lives of all who knew her. It was impossible to have a conversation with her and not leave with a smile on your face. She will be deeply missed.
