New Paintings by Christopher Mathie will continue to be shown at the White Bird Gallery through June 17th.

Christopher Mathie has been creating artwork and showing in galleries for over 30 years. While he has always been an emotional painter, Mathie notes that something has recently changed in his perceptions about creating art.

The 52-year-old painter says he feels like he is finally starting to relax into who he really is.

As Mathie states, "Maybe that's part of maturing, and I feel it in the art studio. Earlier work often came from difficult, even painful emotions. Now with a little age under my belt I'm more often creating from joy and a peaceful gratitude for life. I'm even painting things that just make me laugh, like some of the figurative pieces in this collection. I think my work will always have a certain intensity, but I hope my new work will also entertain and portray romanticism for my subjects. I hope viewers will be led to ponder what they are grateful for and what they love."

For this new exhibition, Christopher Mathie focused on figuration, with themes of humans, animals and birds as subjects, in addition to his signature expressive seascapes.

“There's a strong connection between how I've been painting seascapes and the brand new figures for this show. When I'm making abstractions inside the figure I think about how water and atmosphere move...which is like how I imagine our emotions move within us.”
