ST. MARTINVILLE, La. ( KLFY ) — St. Martin Parish President Pete Delcambre says his transition has been challenging, but he says he is determined to make the parish a better place for residents and visitors.

Delcambre was sworn into office on Jan. 8. He says he wants to continue the work of his predecessor, Chester Cedars, which includes projects to fix eight roads in the parish and improving the water systems.

“I’m not here to reinvent the wheel,” Delcambre said. “Chester Cedars and the staff here had this ship running in a very ordered and structured way, so I just picked up on that.”

Delcambre says the parish faced a lot of challenges this weekend with the severe weather, but says the government is continuing to work tirelessly to address them head-on.

“This past weekend we had eight inches of rain in the Henderson/Cecilia/Breaux Bridge area,” he said. “On top of everything else we do, we’re being inundated with outside contingencies that we have to deal with.”

He says his role goes beyond politics. It is also about dedicating his job to helping the community.

“The people that I represent are not just a representative on the people, it’s my people, it’s my family, it’s my friends,” he said. “When I take things, I take it to heart.”

With these projects and grants in place, Delcambre says he is committed to ensuring everyone living in the parish is happy with its government.
