It’s internship season for those pursuing careers in the legal field. At the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, 101 law school, graduate, and undergraduate students have joined as interns. They will gain first-hand experience in public service as well as the criminal justice system through their summer internships.

“I am excited to welcome this elite group of students to our team. Internships are vital to career development and boosting employability after graduation,” District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a news release about the summer internship program.

“This internship class will get hands-on experience working alongside prosecutors, investigators, and other staff, assisting with active investigations, preparing misdemeanor and felony cases for hearings and trials, and participating in community outreach,” he said.

This summer’s interns are beginning the program at a time when the DA’s office is pressing additional charges against the suspect in the Long Island serial killings. There was no word yet as to whether interns would have opportunity to work alongside experts on that case.

Members of this year’s internship class hail from 16 law schools and 36 universities and colleges from across the nation. While many attend school in New York, others have traveled from as far away as Alabama, Florida, Indiana, Ohio and the Philippines. Among the interns, they speak 16 different languages, in addition to English, including American Sign Language, Ancient Greek, Farsi, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Korean, Latin, Mandarin, Punjabi, Sindhi, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu and Vietnamese.

Interns will have the opportunity to observe arraignments in Suffolk County First District Court as well as tour portions of the Suffolk Police Department, the Suffolk Crime Laboratory, Suffolk Correctional Facilities, the Suffolk Medical Examiner and the U.S. Federal District Court.

This year’s interns attend schools in New York that include the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University, Touro University Jacob D.
