The nonprofit Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) recently expanded its eRoadMAP tool to help fleet operators, logistics providers, and charging site developers track down and plot out available power capacity capable of accommodating electric vehicle (EV) charging sites.

Currently, the e-tool examines 10 large utilities in California, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Rhode Island. These include Southern California Edison, Pacific Gas & Electric, National Grid, Con Edison, and Orange & Rockland Electric Company, among others. The organization plans to expand its data reach further.

This can be tricky, as hosting capacity maps are not always available. In those cases, EPRI said it would turn to substation-level location, capacity, and distribution voltage information from utilities. That sort of data can still help stakeholders determine what’s available for them to service light, medium, and heavy-duty EVs and assess how soon EVs could be expected in various areas.

“To make meaningful strides in electrifying transportation over the next decade – a relatively short period of time – we need to simplify the complex interface between thousands of electric utilities and tens of thousands of fleet operators and charging providers,” EPRI Director of Transportation Britta Gross said. “As part of our mission to serve the public interest, EPRI is collaborating with stakeholders across the utility, fleet, and vehicle manufacturing industries to feed critical data into eRoadMAP – an increasingly powerful tool that arms electrification leaders with the information needed to plan and prioritize charging projects and grid upgrades.”

eRoadMAP first launched in November 2023. Eventually, EPRI intends to integrate utility service territory maps representing all 3,200 utilities in the U.S. EPRI itself works with more than 450 companies across 45 countries in its work to increase electricity access.
