Today, Glen Powell is everyone’s favorite loveable movie star. However, it sounds like he was quite the prankster in school.

During an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show this week, Glen looked back on the day he released 3,000 crickets into his middle school — yep, the same man making rom-coms and stealing hearts is the same kid who was buying insects to terrorize his schoolmates.

“It was the last day of eighth grade… I wanted to pull a prank, so I decided to release 3,000 crickets in the hallway right before lunch,” Glen explained when Jennifer asked him to debunk a TikTok about the prank shared by a student at his former middle school.

“There’s like this funnel in the hallway where everybody just sprints out of class and runs through… I thought it’d be funny to release 3,000 crickets in that hallway right before the bell rang.”

Describing himself as the Danny Ocean of the operation, Glen said he sought the help of a few of his buddies. “It was all set up. We had the timing down to literally the exact minute,” he recalled, noting it was all going “according to plan” until he “decided to go rogue.”

Now stuck in the principal’s office, Glen had no choice but to watch the cricket prank unfold from a distance — although it sounds like the detour worked in his favor, securing him the ultimate alibi.

“All of a sudden, you hear: ‘Crickets!!!’ and people are just screaming and crickets are flying around, everybody’s losing it,” he recalled. “And [the Principal] just goes, ‘Did you have something to do with this?’ and I was like, ‘Dude, I’ve been in here the whole time.’”

So, while Glen got away free of charge 20 years ago, the students at his middle school continue to pay the price.

“Now the people at Canyon Vista Middle School have to wear translucent backpacks because, you know, you can smuggle crickets, I guess,” he said, giving a formal apology to the students of his old school — and the unnamed English teacher who got caught up in the stinkbomb incident.

“I hope the backpacks are working out. I’ll come back and visit soon. Thank you for understanding. It was worth it,” he joked.

The viral TikTok about the incident drew attention to the backpack rule, with the caption: “when we aren’t allowed to have backpacks because in 2003 Glen Powell let out 3000 crickets into the cafeteria.”

Discussing the prank for the first time in 2018, Glen told The Ringer that he acquired the insects by hitting up his local pet stores. He also drew links between his teenage rebellion and acting career , saying: “That’s kind of where half this stuff comes from. If you’re an actor and you’re following rules, you’re never going to make it.”
