WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – During the D-Day ceremony in France, President Joe Biden linked the allied efforts then to the fight for Ukraine. The president will give a speech later today on democracy and freedom.

President Biden emphasized that the fight for Ukraine echoes that struggle for freedom 80 years ago on the beaches of Normandy.

“Ukraine has been invaded by a tyrant bent on domination,” said Biden.

Biden sent a message to democracies that Ukraine is under threat by Russia and Vladimir Putin.

“Ukrainians are fighting with extraordinary courage, suffering great losses but never backing down,” said Biden.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in attendance with other allied leaders. Biden promised the U.S. would not walk away from the conflict.

“The United States and NATO and a coalition of more than 50 countries stand strong with Ukraine,” said Biden.

He also warned that if Russia wasn’t stopped Putin would continue and threaten Ukraine’s neighbors.

“We cannot let that happen. To surrender to bullies, to bow down to dictators is simply unthinkable,” said Biden.

Other world leaders like French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau echoed Biden’s message and promised unwavering support for Ukraine.
