WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – President Biden is in France where he met with the president of Ukraine to talk about new aid, and to deliver a message about the future of democracy and America’s role in protecting it.

On the heels of the D-Day anniversary President Biden is trying to make the case that the world is facing similar threats to democracy, and he argues America has a responsibility to do something about that.

In a sit-down meeting with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, President Biden delivered both a promise and an apology.

“I’m not going to walk away from you. I apologize for the weeks of not knowing what’s going to pass in terms of funding,” said Biden.

Despite the delay in U.S. aid for Ukraine, President Biden insists the U.S.  will continue its support and he announced a new $225 million aid package for the country which includes rocket systems and artillery.

Just recently, the U.S. gave Ukraine permission to use the weapons America sends for limited attacks inside of Russia.  He hopes it will help Ukraine gain ground in their fight.

“We count on your continuing support standing with us,” said Zelenskyy.

Later in the day, President Biden gave a speech at Pointe du Hoc, the spot where Army Rangers scaled seaside cliffs during D-Day 80 years ago.

He reflected on the heroism of those soldiers and the lesson they left behind.

“They’re asking us to stay true to what America stands for,” said Biden.

He says their legacy should rally present day Americans.

“To protect freedom in our time, to defend democracy, to stand up aggression abroad and at home,” Biden said.

In the lead up to the presidential election, President Biden has been working to draw a sharp contrast between his foreign policy plans and former president Trump’s vision.
