Pat Sajak , the long-time host of Wheel of Fortune , has made a surprising change to the game's rules as he prepares to say goodbye after 41 years.

His last episode started with his first-ever introduction on his first episode of Wheel of Fortune back in 1981. It then cut to the current studio where Pat and Vanna White walked out together for the last time.

The host humorously claimed that he was 'robbing' his contestants when he decided to spin the wheel himself to save time for his final farewell at the end of the show. He told the audience and the contestants: "I think most people know this is my last evening on the show and at the end I've got a few things I want to say."

"So we need to save a little time. How do we do that?" Pat continued, "We're going to cut out a round which kind of robs you people. I'm going to spin it and add $1,000."

Pat then spun the wheel himself and wasn't impressed with the outcome. He gifted the lucky contestants $5,000. "Little Jimmy's surgery will have to wait," Pat joked.

At the end of the half-hour, Pat addressed the camera. "The time has come to say goodbye. I have a few thanks and acknowledgments before I go. And I want to start with all of you watching out there," he said.

""It’s been an incredible privilege to be invited into millions of homes, night after night, decade after decade. And I always felt that the privilege came with the responsibility to keep this daily half-hour a safe place for family fun. No social issues. No politics. Nothing embarrassing, I hope. Just a game. But gradually it became more than that," he continued.

Pat added: "Thank you for allowing me into your lives." He then added how the contestants "were the real stars of the show." He added: I genuinely like these people and I'll miss the chance to meet more of them."
