Kerry Washington, an actress, used the hashtag #BlackWifeEffect on June 4 to showcase how her Olivia Pope character impacted Tony Goldwyn’s President Fitzgerald Grant character’s wardrobe amid a montage of early-career pictures of Goldwyn, frequently with messy hair.
Kerry Washington said that her character was to blame for the actor’s physical transformation when the “Black Wife Effect” took hold of him.
With the video featuring Tommy Richman’s “Million Dollar Baby” playing in the background, Kerry wrote on Instagram :
“Tony! I’ve upgraded your life in so many ways, #BlackWifeEffect, and today I’m adding one more.
She concluded the post encouraging him (and fans) to register to vote: “Go upgrade your voter registration status to registered😜. Love you!!!!!!”
Kerry Washington compares older pictures of Goldwyn with those taken after the characters were married to argue that having her as his onscreen wife caused him to have a significant glow-up.
Fitz and Olivia, a politician and his fixer, had a turbulent on-again, off-again romance that lasted seven scandalous seasons between Washington and Goldwyn.
As the star-crossed lovers of D.C., they succeeded in over 124 episodes of episodes, kidnappings, fraudulent elections, and self-sabotage.
The on-screen pair were married in season six and had a rough start to their post-wedding life, but by the time of the 2018 series finale, they had reconciled.
Mini-reunions and several social media posts honoring their experience on the television series have helped Goldwyn and Washington maintain their love after it ended.
Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Scandal , has at least indicated that she would be interested in seeing Kerry Washington’s ferocious political fixer back on TV.
When asked in 2023 which character from Scandal she would like to see again, Rhimes said,
“Olivia Pope. Even in her darker moments, I really liked that character. That character is fantastic; I really enjoy her.”
