Stunningly Opulent Hotel in Vietnam Charges a Surprising Nightly Rate

When choosing accommodations, especially while traveling abroad, luxury and affordability are two qualities that don't often overlap. You can get some decent, even nice, stays for a good deal if you know where to look, but if you're looking for something opulent and lavish, you'd better be willing to shell out hundreds of bucks a night... most of the time.

There are, of course, some uncommon exceptions. Case in point: this stunningly opulent hotel located in the mountain region of Sapa, Vietnam. This place looks fit for royalty, but more jaw-dropping than its looks are its surprising nightly rates:

This gorgeous hotel could almost pass for a palace, all marble and glass and vaulted ceilings and ornate detailing, and solo traveler Hannah Brown ( @notalabamahannah on TikTok) had the privilege of staying here for the exorbitant price of... $80 USD a night? Yep: for the same price as a room in a modest American chain hotel ( and sometimes not even that, depending on location and season), Hannah got to luxuriate in this lavish luxury resort. Jaw, meet floor.

Of course, I want to give a caveat that when international travelers talk about a destination or hotel being "affordable," it's all relative, as average incomes and costs of living vary a lot between countries. A recent report from China's Xinhua News put the median Vietnamese monthly income in Q1 2024 at around 7.6 million VND , or about $304 USD. Of course, the cost of living in Vietnam is also much lower than in the US, but a hotel room that costs upwards of $80 a night would nevertheless be quite the splurge. For the American visitor who's used to high US prices, however, it ain't half bad!

The Hotel de la Coupole, Sapa

Now that that little caveat is out of the way, wow is this place a stunner! The swimming pool alone looks like something out of the Palace of Versailles , and the rest of the hotel carries that feel too, combining French Colonial and Vietnamese styles into this stunning palatial resort.

This is the Hotel de la Coupole in Sapa, Vietnam, part of the MGallery collection of international boutique hotels . The hotel's style draws inspiration from the colonialist French Indochine era of the 1920s and 1930s and from local hill tribes indigenous to Vietnam's Sapa region. In addition to its luxurious suites, the Hotel de la Coupole is home to several French eateries, the opulent kid's club Hannah showed off, an extensive fitness center and spa, and, of course, Le Grand Bassin- that stunning green marble swimming pool. Guests who want to venture out can take the hotel's Fansipan cable car up into the mountains!

Hannah mentioned in the comments that she had taken this trip several months ago, and looking at the Hotel de la Coupole's rates now, rooms start at around $110 a night. Still, as far as luxury resort rates go, $110 a night is still a steal in my book!
