PEOPLE are only just realising what the loop on your jeans is really used for after one person sparked a huge discussion online about it.

The loop is usually located beneath the pockets next to the leg seam.

But since one fashion fan flagged it - people have been trying to work out what exactly it’s used for.

The anonymous person shared their confusion on the online forum called Reddit.

They took a picture of their jeans, which was zoomed in to a small loop which was beneath the pocket on the dark blue jeans.

The fashion fan then shared a picture on the site with a caption asking other users to help work it out.

It read: "What is the purpose of this in a pair of jeans?"

The post attracted lots of attention, with others confused as to why the jeans had this mysterious loop.

One joked: “It’s to literally catch on every edge you didn’t realise was there. Nail sticking out 0.2mm yeah, it'll find it.

"Running late and rushing to catch the bus, yeah, that door handle has other ideas."

Another added: "They work great for ripping off cabinet doors when you accidentally walk close enough for the loop to catch one of the handles."

Whilst someone else simply stated: “[It’s for] swag.”

However, others seemed to work out what it is exactly for, with one stating that it is a “hammer hoop.”

According to trouser company Make Your Own Jeans, the mysterious hoop is what makes the difference between cargo and carpenter pants.

Carpenter pants need pockets and bonuses like the loop, to help hold some of their equipment whilst out on jobs.

The website states: "If you inspect a pair of carpenter jeans, you'll notice they have a loop on one or both pant legs.

"The loop is typically placed about six or so inches below the main pocket.

"Many carpenter jeans also have a small vertical pocket directly below the loop.

"Known as a hammer loop, it's used to store and carry a hammer.

"The original IT girls, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot helped make the trousers - also called Capri pants - look effortlessly cool and glam.

"Somehow this time round they don’t seem to be having that same effect."

"Carpenters and other workers can slide a hammer through the top of the hammer loop, at which point the handle will fall into the underlying vertical pocket."

The jean brand continues: “Carpenter jeans make their job a little easier by allowing carpenters to carry tools directly on their jeans without the need for a separate tool belt.

"If your job requires you to carry and use small handheld tools on a daily basis, there’s no better choice of trousers than carpenter jeans."

And this isn’t the only thing that people are only just starting to realise the meaning of.

It was recently reported that Brits just discovered what a washing symbol on the label of their clothes means.

Many people would not be able to tell what the triangle means, as it can also come in four different forms.

These include an empty triangle, a triangle with CL inside and a cross through, a triangle with a cross through it, and a triangle with two diagonal lines through it.

A triangle with two diagonal lines inside of a triangle with CL inside and a cross through both mean that you should use non-chlorine bleach.

Having an empty triangle means you can bleach the item.

But a triangle with a cross through it will mean that the item must not be bleached.
