Any millennial who grew up watching Charlie’s Angels was in awe of at least one of the three angels, played by Lucy Liu, Cameron Diaz, and Drew Barrymore. These three actresses became an unstoppable force, both on and off the screen, symbolizing the girl-power movement of the early 2000s and clearly having a lot of fun while doing it. Who can forget the adrenaline-pumping action sequences, the cheeky humor meant to subvert the male gaze, and, of course, the soundtrack featuring Destiny’s Child’s “Independent Women”? The film perfectly encapsulated everything about the early aughts — both the cringe and the cool.

While the trio rocked a ton of y2k-inspired ‘fits in the films, it was Barrymore’s outfit at the premiere of the sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle in 2003, that stuck in people’s minds. Sporting a bold “My boyfriend is out of town” t-shirt, black leather pants, and wavy blonde hair, she perfectly captured the indie sleaze rocker vibe of the early 2000s. (At the time, she was dating the Strokes drummer Fabrizio Morretti.)

Fast forward to June 2024, and the talk show host, now 49, decided to pay tribute to that memorable Y2K moment with a dramatic hair makeover on her eponymous show. The transformation saw her donning fierce blonde locks reminiscent of her Full Throttle premiere look. With grunge makeup and a playful attitude, Barrymore not only channeled her inner early-2000s self, but seemed to look identical to it.

“This is my chance to say nothing, do nothing,” she shared in a behind-the-scenes Instagram video, “and just be the clay, and they get to mold it.” After hours in the glam chair, Drew’s reaction to her transformation was priceless. “Oh my god, that’s me!” she exclaimed. “You just put a time machine in me. I feel like that girl again. I feel like I’m back at the Charlie’s Angels 2 premiere.”

However, anyone hoping that Barrymore is going back to her Y2K locks shouldn’t hold their breath. Once filming wrapped, the blonde wig came off, and so did her makeup. Reflecting on the experience, she told her stylist Chris, “Good to know I could look like a Charlie’s Angel again.”

While Barrymore’s hair transformation was only a brief little skip down memory lane, we can’t help but hope that some of the cooler trends of the early aughts — particularly Barrymore’s rocker look — come back in style , full throttle.
