Circleville citizens are invited to attend the unveiling of the two monuments at the southeast and southwest corners of Court & Main Street at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 18. It is obvious to a casual observer that the southeast monument will be a pedestal clock, but what is under wraps across the street?

“A small group of us thought it would be good to bring back the history of Circleville,” said Richard Gerhardt, Chairman of the Design Committee of Uptown Circleville, whose motto is “shop.live.play.invest.”

Uptown Circleville is affiliated with the Ohio Heritage Foundation and Main Street USA. The Design Committee has the desire to make Circleville more attractive by improving the physical appearance of the downtown area.

Their first project, funded by a donation from Forjack Industrial, was to paint the utility boxes in the downtown area.

“When you paint the utility boxes, you make them go away so they’re no longer an eyesore,” explained Gerhardt.

Gerhardt noted that old photos of the downtown showed 3 or 4 pedestal clocks and liked the idea of bringing that tradition back. The monuments will serve as a gateway to City Hall and the Courthouse.

Gerhardt thanked Mayor Michelle Blanton, Service Director Jim Stanley and City Council. The cost of the monuments was covered by donations to Uptown Circleville, and the City helped by handling the installation.
