Bears are big, fluffy, and surprising cute, and as an animal lover myself, I can't get enough of them- from a nice, safe distance, that is. Normally, bears are equally as shy of us as we are of them and are more than happy to respect that safe distance, with one notable exception: bears get a lot more bold when there's free snacks on the line.

Bears typically prowl for food in dense forests, national parks, and (unfortunately) the occasional suburban neighborhood, but this Canadian bear got a little bougie with his foraging mission. A golfer at one British Columbia golf course was shocked when she discovered a hungry black bear treating the contents of her golf cart like a buffet!

"Oh, he's taking our lunch," April Lorimer can be heard lamenting on her unusual video (shared to TikTok by @abc7la ). Focused on the green, she and her fellow golfers had turned away from their golf cart , and when they looked back, a real-life Yogi Bear was making off with their sack lunch like a DoorDash driver on four paws! The black bear looked pleased as punch as he scampered away with the goods, and as for April- well, hopefully that golf course had a good club restaurant!

According to CTV News , this happened at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club in Whistler, British Columbia, an area better known for its famous ski resort . As noted in the ABC report, experts remarked that black bears can usually be seen from ski resort gondolas or on distant fairways, but rarely do they come this close to humans. This bear simply saw an opportunity and took it!

Keeping Your Lunch Safe from Bears

As much as I get a kick out of seeing mischevious bears scamper off with someone else's lunch, I always have to give the caveat that this is not a good thing. It's commonly known that bears growing a taste for human food is trouble, as they start to see people as food sources. They can become very food-aggressive around humans, which can potentially lead to violent bear-human encounters if things escalate far enough!

Of course, April certainly didn't intend to have a bear steal her lunch, and it seems that the local golfers didn't anticipate bears coming this close. Still, Whistler is very much entrenched in " bear country ," and anyone in Whistler venturing outside with food might want to take extra precautions!

Bear safety tips for the golf course aren't as widespread as bear safety advice when hiking or camping. However, the Long Beach Golf Course in Tofino, British Columbia, warns its visitors to keep their food and garbage stored in airtight containers (ideally in an RV or car trunk for guests staying on their campgrounds). Remember, a cooler is not necessarily sufficient for this task- your best bet is to pick up a few smell-proof " bear canisters " that will totally trap in any enticing smells. If the bears can't smell your snacks, they'll never miss 'em!
