With primary elections nearing, U.S. Rep John Curtis and Gov. Spencer Cox are leading in the polls, according to a pair of new surveys .

Why it matters: The polling results are a snapshot into Utah voters' preferences for more moderate Republicans in a deep red state that's demonstrated low enthusiasm for former President Trump .

How it works: Both polls were conducted by HarrisX for the Deseret News and the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics between June 4-7.

    • The U.S. Senate poll surveyed 469 registered Republican voters, while the gubernatorial poll surveyed 477 registered voters.

By the numbers: Curtis, who has been in office since 2017, holds a commanding lead in the U.S. Senate GOP primary field to replace retiring Sen. Mitt Romney .

    • The former Provo mayor garnered 34% of support. Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs secured 16%, former House Speaker Brad Wilson obtained 12% and businessman Jason Walton received 4%.
    • Yes, but: About one-third of voters remain undecided.

The first-term governor leads his GOP opponent state Rep. Phil Lyman 62% to 25%. Lyman was pardoned by Trump in 2020 for leading an illegal ATV protest on federal land.

    • About 12% of registered voters said they were undecided.

Context: Curtis, a former Democrat , is widely considered the most moderate GOP candidate running for U.S. Senate. Staggs, who was endorsed by Trump in April, is the most far-right candidate.

What we're watching: Cox is scheduled to debate Lyman Tuesday at 6pm. The event will be televised on PBS Utah and other local channels and streamed live by the Utah Debate Commission.
