WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – Just one week after it began, the federal trial of Hunter Biden is coming to a close. On Monday the jury began deliberating whether to find the president’s son guilty of three felony crimes for allegedly buying a gun while addicted to drugs.

During closing arguments, prosecutors say they showed that Hunter Biden lied on a federal form about his drug use while buying a gun in 2018.

Former federal prosecutor David Weinstein says the prosecution checked all the boxes in this case.

“They’ve introduced evidence that shows they have proof that the defendant knew he was an addict and was in fact absolutely abusing,” Weinstein said.

However, the defense argued Hunter didn’t consider himself an addict when he filled out the form.

“Did he knowingly sign that form? And the defense has presented enough that one or more jurors may not think so,” Weinstein said.

Over the past week the jury heard emotional testimony from multiple members of the Biden family about Hunter’s issues with addiction.

NewsNation contributor and Attorney A. Scott Bolden says that may strike a chord with some jurors.

“It’s very sympathetic. We don’t think of it as a crime. We think of it as a health issue. That’s the danger the prosecution is running into,” Bolden said.

If he’s found guilty of all three felony charges, Hunter faces a prison sentence of up to 25 years. But he is a first-time offender, so Bolden predicts he won’t actually be sent to jail.

“I don’t see the judge sentencing him to any time. He’s probably probation eligible,” Bolden said.

Plus, any possible conviction may not be the end of the fight.

“This case is going to be about the appeal. It’s not going to be over no matter what the verdict is,” Bolden said.
