On May 21, the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles denied parole to a man convicted as a sexual offender in Butler County.

Larry Douglas Pate, 46, was denied parole in a May 21 hearing. He is currently housed at the Kilby Correctional Facility and has served one year of a 15-year sentence for violating sex offender registry laws.

Pate’s sentence resulted from a February 2023 conviction for the violation after a Feb. 22, 2016 sentence for second-degree rape and violation of sex offender registry laws. Before his 2016 conviction, Pate served time on a 15-year sentence resulting from June 2006 convictions for third=degree burglary and distributing a controlled substance.

Butler County convictions for Pate span back to 2001 when he was sentenced to 10 years in January for second-degree robbery and two- and three-year concurrent sentences in May for third-degree burglary and distributing a controlled substance (respectively).

Officers of the court with District Attorney Charlotte Tesmer, Victims of Crime and Leniency (VOCAL) or the Alabama Attorney General’s Victim Services Office can attend parole hearings on behalf of the victims of violent crimes. No one appeared before the board to speak for or against Pate’s parole and the board denied his request with a reset date in May 2006.

The board heard 27 parole petitions, granting nine and denying 18.

The board also held 10 pardon hearings, granting four and denying six.
