There are so many milestones to celebrate during the first years of your baby's life, and they're all exciting in different ways — but some are definitely more adorable than others!

In a video posted on June 10, a baby girl makes a super cute discovery that's actually pretty inspiring. As she's crawling along on the floor, she passes by a mirror...and she immediately falls in love with the little person she sees! "Watching my baby love herself bc the world hasn't told her to pick herself apart yet," wrote her mom.

"Wish we could all look in the mirror and be this happy," wrote Rini Frey . If only! Everyone should be this delighted by their own reflection. As this little girl grows up, it's inevitable that her relationship with the person she sees in the mirror will change, but that doesn't mean it can't remain a positive one.

Interestingly enough, this baby might not actually realize that she and the infant in the mirror are one and the same just yet. Experts say this milestone usually happens when babies are a bit older than this girl.

When Do Babies Recognize Themselves in the Mirror?

According to Psychology Today, " recognizing their own reflection isn’t something that babies can do until around 18 months of age."

"It isn’t clear why it takes babies 18 months to recognize themselves. It doesn’t seem to matter how much experience they have looking in mirrors either; babies who have never seen a mirror before show the same pattern of responding when compared to babies who see mirrors all the time. And we know that they recognize that their faces are familiar in both photographs and videos by 8 months of age, preferring to look at faces of a new baby than at their own face.

Recognizing themselves in the mirror seems to be a bit more complicated , and involves being able to think about themselves as independent beings that have minds and thoughts that are separate and distinct from yours or mine. This is important, as it marks the beginnings of theory of mind. Theory of mind is the understanding that other people have thoughts and feelings that are separate from yours. It is what allows children to understand other people’s intentions and emotions, and is related to a variety of important prosocial behaviors, like sharing and helping , and potentially even deceptive behaviors like lying."

Even before babies technically recognize their own reflection, they can still have fun playing with mirrors!
