A COSTCO customer canceled their membership after they were told their daughter wasn’t allowed to use their card to shop.

One of the major benefits of having a Costco membership is that it includes two cards.

Even the most basic $60 membership comes with two cards for people who live in the same household.

But a family was told their daughter couldn’t use the card.

“Canceled my Costco membership and credit card today,” the shopper wrote on X, formerly Twitter .

“My college student daughter who lives with us can’t use her parents’ membership card?

“You are forcing those who live in the same household to pay for another membership?”

The shopper asked why Costco couldn’t verify their daughter’s address to see that she is also a household member.

This appears to be part of a bigger crackdown regarding membership sharing.

Costco recently started asking shoppers for their membership cards and photo ID at self-checkout and employee-manner registers, reports ABC News affiliate KABC-TV.

Some locations have also started asking members to scan their cards to enter the warehouse.

“We don’t feel it’s right that non-members receive the same benefits and pricing as our members,” Costco said when it announced the change.

But customers aren’t fond of the changes.

“You already need to scan your card to pay,” one shopper noted on X.

“The only thing this is going to cause is more chaos and long lines to get into the store. I already try to limit my Costco runs to once a month because I hate all the crowds.

“This is NOT going to improve customer experience.”

Another person said that Sam’s Club “would never” implement such a policy, so they preferred to shop there instead.

    MEMBERSHIP MISHAP

One Costco member had their membership suspended after the store made a mistake with a refund.

“Returning the item was easy, zero problems during that transaction,” they wrote in a Reddit post.

But then, Costco accidentally refunded them twice for the product.

Costco has strict rules for membership use that shoppers must follow and they've been cracking down on offenders in recent years.

    • Primary Member Use : Only the primary cardholder can use this Costco membership card. Sharing it for purchases is not allowed as the photo on the card must match the person using it.
    • Household Card : Each primary member can add one free household cardholder who lives at the same address. This person will receive their own membership card and can shop at Costco independently.
    • Guest Policy : Members can bring up to two guests per visit to Costco. However, only the member can make purchases. Guests must be accompanied by the member.
    • Authorized Cardholder : For an additional fee, you can add an authorized cardholder, such as a family member or friend, who doesn’t reside at your address. They will receive their own card and can shop independently.

A store supervisor called them to explain the error that resulted in the shopper getting over $400 put on their Costco Citi Visa card.

To make matters worse, their membership would be suspended until Costco could rectify the situation.

“I was shocked they would hold my membership hostage for a random mistake on their end,” the shopper wrote.

One thing that Costco customers haven’t been complaining about is the new $5 food court meal that rivals the hot dog combo.

But a new policy limits who can dine at the food court .
