KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) – A man accused of shooting a Kanawha County deputy during a police pursuit has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

Nathan Oxley, 44, appeared in Kanawha County Circuit Court for his arraignment. In May, a grand jury indicted Oxley on charges of attempted murder, use of a firearm during the commission of a felony, malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, wanton endangerment – with firearm, prohibited person in possession of a firearm, fleeing with reckless indifference to the safety of others, resisting arrest, brandishing a firearm, and third and subsequent offense – domestic assault.

Oxley’s bond will remain at $500,000 cash only. He is currently in the South Central Regional Jail, and his trial date has been set for 9 a.m. on Sept. 9.

Those charges stem from an incident on Feb. 29 that began as a police pursuit. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office said the pursuit started just after 1 a.m. that morning on Walker Drive in Sissonville. They said the pursuit is believed to have been initiated after the deputy recognized the vehicle as the suspect vehicle from an active disturbance call he was responding to.

After stopping, a man came out of the vehicle and fired multiple shots at the deputy as he was getting out of his car, hitting his hand.

The suspect and deputy were both taken to the hospital for injuries.

During the preliminary hearing in March, the State called the detective who took a statement from Oxley at the hospital. He stated that Oxley told him that he was aware he was being followed by law enforcement and that at the end of the pursuit, he saw the deputy get out of the vehicle and then fired shots at that deputy.

Court records show an extensive criminal record , going back more than 20 years.

Following his arrest in February, 13 News Reporter Jordan Mead went through numerous criminal complaints for Nathan Oxley and found charges of battery, driving while suspended, assault of police and correctional officers, kidnapping of an ex-girlfriend, destruction of property, and more.

Oxley also faced federal charges for a second domestic violence offense in 2008, and possession of a firearm after he was convicted of that misdemeanor domestic violence offense. Documents also revealed he violated probation after testing positive on multiple occasions for marijuana and methamphetamine in 2011.
