Baby Screams in Terror Over Painting & Parents Can't Stop Laughing

When it comes to art, people's opinions are subjective. Everybody likes something different, for their own personal reasons, which can't always be explained. Even little kids can have very powerful (and sometimes, very unexpected) reactions to art!

In a hilarious video posted on June 9, a family has been painting each other's portraits...but not everybody is a fan of the results. In fact, whenever the baby sees one of the paintings, she totally freaks out — and not in a good way!

"Someone found our family paint night terrifying," wrote @iglosinggravity . Oh no! Poor little thing! She was completely horrified , as commenters pointed out.

"Baby got the uncanny valley. She know something ain't right," wrote DVO.

"Good thing she doesn't have object permanence yet and calms down when it's away lol," wrote sar_wich.

Other commenters were super curious to see the painting that terrified this baby so much, which can be viewed in another video . Honestly, it's kind of cute — but sometimes babies get scared by stuff you wouldn't expect!

What Kind of Things Scare Babies?

Long before they start being afraid of monsters or the dark, babies can notice the differences between "negative emotional expressions like fear, sadness, and anger," according to Zero to Three. By the time they're between the ages of 5 and 7 months, they begin to understand the meaning associated with a fearful face.

"Generally, 7-month-old babies pay more attention to faces with fearful expressions (compared to happy or neutral expressions). Some researchers think that’s because babies rarely see fearful expressions, so perhaps these faces are more interesting. Other researchers take this as evidence that babies are beginning to understand the meaning of these expressions. For example, babies don’t pay more attention to angry faces — only fearful ones. 7-month-olds also take longer to look away from a fearful face than a happy one.

Between 8 and 12 months of age — around the same time they understand the meaning of a fearful face — babies begin to produce fearful expressions and other fear-based behaviors, like clinging to a parent, making distressed sounds, or turning away."

Maybe the baby in this video thought the face in that portrait was a fearful one. Either that, or she simply has high standards when it comes to art!
