WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – On the same day President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden was found guilty on gun-related charges, the president delivered remarks on reducing gun violence at a conference hosted by Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund.

President Biden walked on stage to chants of “four more years!” from the crowd filled with mothers who lost children to gun violence, along with volunteers and gun safety advocates.

“We’ve proven we can do more than just thoughts and prayers,” Biden said on Tuesday. “No single action can solve the entirety of the gun violence epidemic, but together our efforts, your efforts are saving lives.”

The Biden campaign believes gun control is an important issue for key voters like suburban college-educated women. During his remarks, Biden emphasized that more needs to be done to curb gun violence.

“It’s time once again to do what I did when I was a senator, ban assault weapons,” Biden said. “It’s time we establish universal background checks.”

In 2022, President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law, which expanded background checks and provided billions of dollars to programs to help curb gun violence.

“It’s the most significant gun legislation in nearly 30 years,” Biden said. “It was designed to reduce gun violence and save lives and I’m so proud of the tremendous progress we’ve made since then.”

Biden’s messaging on gun control comes in stark contrast to former president Donald Trump’s. Trump won the endorsement of the National Rifle Association in May.
