Stefanik promotes plan for more women as GOP candidates

WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – One by one, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) introduced voters to six women running for Congress.

She’s helping finance their campaigns through an action committee she started in 2018.

“E-PAC candidates are once again the tip of the spear in our fight to protect and expand our House Republican majority,” Stefanik said.

E-PAC’s goal is to increase the number of conservative women serving in Congress.

“We don’t just endorse candidates because they’re women. We endorse the best candidates in these races who are women leaders,” Stefanik said.

Candidates like Alison Esposito from New York and Caroleene Dobson from Alabama say this kind of support means so much, especially coming from Stefanik.

“The guidance and the mentoring that she has shown us, it’s been there aren’t really words. She’s been, she’s been fantastic. And it’s very much appreciated,” Esposito said,

“Tripled the number of Republican women in such a short amount of time. So, I’m so honored to be included in this slate of candidates,” Dobson said.

While the Republicans praised the gains they’ve made, the Democratic National Committee wants to stunt that growth.

“The Republican party has really shown that they’re not the party for women,” Hannah Muldavin, DNC Spokesperson, said.

Muldavin argues a majority of women in Congress are Democrats and Democrats care about issues that impact women.

“What we need to do is make sure that we focus on the policies that do support women, that do support jobs and the economy. And that’s something that Democrats have that Republicans just don’t,” Muldavin said.

Republicans hold a slim majority in the House, so each race could be the one to swing the balance.
