The Open Door Food Pantry of Perquimans County has received two grants totaling $8,500 to assist with its mission to help feed healthy, nutritious meals to county residents.

The Hertford-based nonprofit received a $5,000 grant from the Northern Albemarle Community Foundation to help fund its Bagley’s Recipes Program and a $3,500 grant from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to use providing healthy food and nutrition education, Dina Hurdle, chair of the Open Door Board of Directors said in press releases.

“The Northern Albemarle Community Foundation grant enables us to sustain the recipe program that we initiated as a pilot in February 2022,” Hurdle said. “Through this program, we offer our neighbors monthly recipes for a nutritious main course, side, dessert, snack, or breakfast item, along with the ingredients we supply.”

Hurdle said the Bagley’s Recipes Program has had “significant impact” because it allows families to explore recipes together and cook together.

“This (NACF) grant will furnish the necessary resources to acquire ingredients and introduce new foods and recipes to families,” Hurdle said. “It also enables our volunteers to actively support our mission to eliminate hunger and improve the health and well-being of our community by providing access to nutritious foods, education and advocacy.”

Hurdle said the Food Lions Feeds grant will help Perquimans residents experiencing hunger “increase their access to nutritious food.” It also will help those “experiencing food insecurity” receive nutrition education to reduce their health risks.

“The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation’s donation enables us to assist those in Perquimans County who face daily challenges by offering fresh, healthy food and nutritional education,” Hurdle said.

The Northern Albemarle Community Foundation is an affiliate of the N.C. Community Foundation. The Food Lions Feeds Charitable Foundation has awarded more than $18.9 million in grants since its inception in 2001.
